Our History
Easterseals Washington has been a trusted provider of services for children and adults with disabilities and their families for generations. Since our incorporation in 1947, we’ve remained committed to helping individuals live with greater independence, purpose, and connection to their communities.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Easterseals began with a story of compassion and determination. In the early 20th century, Edgar Allen, a businessman from Ohio, experienced a personal tragedy that revealed the lack of accessible medical care for children with disabilities. Moved to take action, he launched a movement that would grow into a national organization focused on removing barriers and creating opportunities for people of all abilities.
What started as a local initiative became a powerful force for change, helping individuals and families across the country live with greater independence and dignity.
The Birth of the Easter "Seal"
In 1952, the lily — a symbol of spring, renewal, and hope — was officially adopted as the organization’s logo and has appeared on every seal since.
